About Dr. Merriman

I am a Professional School Counselor in private practice, but really, and this is important, I'm a Teacher.--that's what I do. I leave the counseling to others more inclined (and better skilled) in that role. I teach Social Skills, and Executive Functioning (and related skills) to those with an identified social deficit, whether from ADHD, ASD, or most any other cause. I appreciate diagnoses, but I don't diagnose, and I'm much more interested in behavior and how to shape it. About half of my clients could safely be described as "neurotypical," but all have workable challenges. I'm outcomes driven, and I believe in tangible measurable results. If we can't measure it, I'm not sure it's happening.

I take that approach with all that I teach, which, in addition to Social Skills and Executive Functioning, includes College Selection and Support, Adulting, Behavior Modification, Parenting Strategies, and Parent Campus Relations. These are areas of high competence for me. I get results. Or, if not, I eagerly refer out to someone better suited to meet needs, to achieve those outcomes. I'm not possessive of my clients; instead, I value results, regardless of who makes them happen. Competence, which I teach, leads to happiness, which leads to power--I'm always thinking in those terms. Watching that process, and being a part of it, makes me happy. I really love my work.

I've been an educator for over 35 years, having taught or counseled in an academic environment with students at every level from pre-kindergarten through doctoral. More recently, for the past fifteen years, I have worked almost exclusively with the same client populations and the same behavioral objectives which I do now. These are the areas in my wheelhouse, and what's outside that house, I decline to do. I'm not a one size fits all kind of guy. I work for joy, and that means I have to focus. That said, in my formal education, I have not focused. Instead, I have sampled a wide variety of idea, relational, and language oriented fields. Curiously, each of these informs my practice, and in ways I had not originally anticipated.

For more information on me, see my (not entirely current) Linked-In page. It details my career path and roles over time. Or, better still, call me and set up a Free Initial Consultation. Those have proved highly productive over the years. Parents and adult clients have many important questions which are best explored face to face. My cell number (713.935.6693) is all over this website. See below.
