Parents and college students sometimes call on me to assist in navigating the academic environment. I've held roles at every level of education and can see conflict from both sides of the equation. I know how to get the best out of school staff, never in a confrontational way (which too often backfires or creates collateral damage). I understand procedures and policies which will work in a student's favor, but are sometimes concealed, at least passively, from those on the "consumer" end of things. I'm sometimes called upon just to provide insight and support at campus meetings, and I can facilitate and maintain a dialogue between parents and school personnel, in part because I speak both languages. For college students, I can be useful in knowing the right questions to ask, and how to ask them, and of whom. My work in campus relations has been as student-specific (and therefore diverse) as any I've done. I attend ordinary ARDs, parent-teacher conferences, and meetings of the university disciplinary committee. Sometimes a physical presence is helpful, but virtual interaction has its place as well.
