Social Skills Instruction
Pro-social behaviors are learned behaviors. Most seem to come naturally over time as a person matures. In fact, though, they are actively developed by direct, if sometimes disorganized, instruction, by observation, and by trial and error (an often brutal but effective learning mode with plenty of collateral damage for some). No one "picks up" prosocial behaviors perfectly and completely, but some lag further behind than others, to their great disadvantage. What I do is focus the instruction piece on a specified and targeted goal, and do it with my client and his context in mind. It's nearly painless and highly efficient. It works. Even seemingly innate behaviors such as empathy are learned behaviors and therefore can be taught. The most basic equation of social behavior is to leave others feeling good about themselves in our company--they'll desire our company in future. The most sophisticated equations are very case specific and require tremendous understanding of the entire social context. I love those exercises, and the outcomes they produce, but everybody needs to begin with that crucial basic equation.
